PCM's function is to reduce the heat exchange between the human body and the environment, and play a "heat insulation" role. Under normal conditions, the body's comfortable temperature is generally between 29~35 ℃ , so it is proper to select PCM of the phase change temperature in this section as a 45 modifier for clothing fibers. For other fibers, the phase change temperature of PCM varies. The latent heat, thermal conductivity and density of materials affect the temperature regulation efficiency of PCM.
Generally, PCM with larger latent heat and density and rapid thermal conductivity should be chosen. The change of volume during phase change has some influence on the application, so it is appropriate to select PCM of the small coefficient of thermal expansion. The performance of cyclic heat storage is also an important index of phase change characteristics, the useful life of PCM is generally greater than 1000 cycles. The phase change process must not bring any degradation and change, no super cooling phenomenon, no loss or change in the laundry process.

Traditional fabrics maintain the normal temperature of the human body by controlling the heat transfer, thermal convection and thermal radiation between the human body and the outside environment. When the ambient temperature is lower than the normal human body temperature, owing to the high human body temperature and low environmental temperature, there is a temperature gradient between the human body and the environment, so the heat of the human body radiates to the environment, and people will feel colder and colder. The traditional solution is to reduce the heat exchange between the human body and the environment by appropriately increasing the thickness of the clothing material to maintain the normal body temperature. Conversely, people will feel hotter and hotter, under this circumstance, the human body cannot dissipate heat by heat radiation, heat convection and heat conduction. Therefore, the skin needs a lot of perspiration, and the evaporation of sweat can take away the heat to maintain the body temperature constant. The traditional solution is to reduce the thickness of clothing materials to increase the heat exchange between the human body and the environment.
Phase change wax with suitable melting point can have phase change according to the change of environment temperature, the phase change wax absorbs or releases heat from the outside, and forms a micro climate with constant temperature around the textile so as to realize the thermoregulation function of the human body. The basic principle is when the material change from solid to liquid state, the molecular spacing in this material increases, molecular activity enhanced, accompanied with environment to provide energy, and stored the energy into the phase change material, the free bound intermolecular forces, crystal melting, vaporization of liquid etc. Similarly, liquid solidification, crystallization, growth, and the like are the opposite.
If the temperature of the environment or human body after exercise rise to melting point of the phase change materials in the clothing, the phase change materials will absorb heat and change from solid to liquid to produce short cooling effect in clothing. But after the phase change wax is completely melted, it cannot continue to absorb heat. If the ambient temperature is lower than the phase transition temperature of phase change wax, the liquid phase change wax will be converted from liquid to solid, thus releasing the stored heat and heating the clothing material. Therefore, the temperature of the human body in the clothing is maintained at the right place.
When people are in a quiet state and the body is in a heat balance, a comfortable average temperature of skin is about 33.4 ℃.If the temperature of skin of various parts of the body is in the range of 30.4-36.4 ℃ , the body feels neither hot nor cold. If the skin temperature of the body parts is more than37.9 ℃ or less than 28.9 ℃ , the body will feel hot or cold. The phase change fiber which absorb heat in high environmental temperature or release heat in low environmental temperature, will greatly improve the comfort of clothing and environmental temperature adaptability, so as to meet the increasing demand of clothing.
